FAMILY COUNSELLING IN TRENTON, ONTARIO

FAMILY COUNSELLING & PARENTING SUPPORT IN QUINTE WEST

When home is tense, everyone feels it.

Woman lying on a blanket, lost in thought

The arguments that start over nothing. The door that slams. The child who used to talk to you and now won't. You can feel it in the mornings, at dinner, on the drive home from school, and you can't fix it on your own no matter how hard you try.

It's exhausting to feel like you're walking on eggshells in your own home. You're not a bad parent, and your child isn't broken. Your family is going through something hard, and you don't have to figure it out alone.

How family counselling can help.

Usually a parent calls about a child or teen, then becomes part of the work and takes tools home. Family counselling gives everyone a place to slow down, be heard, and understand what's happening underneath the conflict.

Our therapists work with families on conflict at home, a child who is struggling, and separation or divorce. We look at the patterns that keep repeating and find new ways for your family to talk and support each other.

Who You’ll See

Taylor Raas, MSW, RSW, sees parents and kids together in family sessions after school. She has over 7 years of clinical experience supporting children, youth and families, including family conflict, grief, neurodivergence and parenting concerns.

Daria Pool, MSW, RSW, started her career in child welfare and has worked with family courts in Ontario and Nova Scotia on high-conflict separations. She works with children from age 6 and gives parents and co-parents their own support with parenting.

Larissa Doidge, RP (Qualifying), works with children from age 6, teens and adults, and supports parents alongside their child's therapy.

Parenting Support in Trenton

When children are not doing well, parents need support too. It's common to feel overwhelmed and not fully equipped to give your child everything they need.

With Daria, the first meeting is with you as the parent, to work out the best approach for your family. From there she can work with your child, help you as a parent, or do a combination of both. Many parents also take home tools and check-ins to use between sessions.

When a Child or Teen Is Struggling

Big feelings without the words to express them don't disappear. They come out as meltdowns, withdrawal, trouble at school, or arguments at home. We see children from age 6, often through play, and teens from 12, who get their own time and their own privacy.

We don't do ADHD or autism assessments, but we support your child and your family while you figure it out.

Families Going Through Separation or Divorce

Separation changes everything at once: two homes, new routines, and children trying to make sense of it all. Family sessions can help parents and kids talk through what's happening, and parenting support can help co-parents find a steadier way forward, even when things are high-conflict. Daria also supports parents involved with CAS or family court.

Family Counselling for Military and Veteran Families

Postings and deployments are hard on the whole family, and the constant moves are often hardest on the kids. One parent carries everything while the other is away, and then everyone has to find their place again when they're home. Every therapist here works with military and Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) families, and we direct bill Canada Life for military spouses and dependants. Spouses and children of veterans can often get sessions through VAC. Ask us on the call.

What to Expect

Family sessions are 50 minutes, in person at our Trenton office, with a parent or parents and a child or teen. Most families come every one to two weeks. After-school and evening times are available, and they're the most requested.

If your family is in a crisis and needs two clinicians, for example one for your child and one for you, we can book them at the same day and time, so it's one trip.

What Family Counselling Costs

Family counselling sessions are $250 for 50 minutes, in person. The 15-minute consultation is free.

We direct bill Manulife, Canada Life and Medavie Blue Cross. Many workplace benefit plans cover therapy with a psychotherapist or social worker. Check with your provider that your plan covers family sessions, and whether it covers a psychotherapist (RP) or a social worker (RSW).
